1865 blog Dear Billy, Hurrah! The war is coming to an end! I have just fought in what is to be believed to be the last battle of the civil war! We have just won at the Appomattox Courthouse, and although we lost 10,780 men, the Confederacy lost 6,000 with 27,805 captured or paroled. Lee has surrendered to Grant at Wilmer McCleam's House under the terms that Lee was to be given 25,000 rations, and they could keep their own personal possessions. Although the Confederacy was to turn over all weapons and flags and promised not to fight. The War is over at last! I am on my way home and hope to see you soon! Best wishes and Love, Father
