Letter Home - Captain Charles Ward

April, 7 2019

My Dearest Henrietta,

After hearing Lincoln call for 75,000 volunteers, I have decided that I am going to enlist in the army, I just can't stand the fact that the South has violated the Constitution and even has the nerve to battle against us! I have joined a regiment called the United Defenders and I am now a captain. Did you hear about the soldiers who were marching from Massachusetts to Washington D.C. and citizens in Baltimore tried to stop their march! Make sure you and the kids are staying safe because we live very close to all this chaos. Oh how I miss you. Tell the children I say hi and that I miss them very much. I hope to see everyone soon. Stay safe!
With love,
Charles Ward
