Letter to Home (Sergeant Parrott)




Dear, Emily

 April 20, 1861

 It's been five days sense new recruits from the union joined the army, from the President calling in 75,000 Volunteers to form an army. I heard that this action led to editorials supporting or criticizing the president. Some volunteers have came to my regiment called "The United Defenders."
 Our Captain seems to be quite the fine leader and we have been doing great so far. We all want to     protect the Union and reunite the United States. I wish I could see you again Emily, but before I could see you again, I need to fight against the "Greybacks" to defend the United States. I hope for the best for you and till we meet again

Letter Home - Captain Charles Ward

April, 7 2019 My Dearest Henrietta, After hearing Lincoln call for 75,000 volunteers , I have decided that I am going to enlist in the army, I just can't stand the fact that the South has violated the Constitution and even has the nerve to  battle against us! I have joined a regiment called the United Defenders and I am now a captain.  Did you hear about the soldiers who were marching from Massachusetts to Washington D.C. and citizens in Baltimore tried to stop their march ! Make sure you and the kids are staying safe because we live very close to all this chaos. Oh how I miss you. Tell the children I say hi and that I miss them very much. I hope to see everyone soon. Hard Tack Recipe (Sebastian W)

Hard Tack Recipe First you are going to need: 2 c. whole wheat flour ½ to 1 c. water 6 pinches of salt 1 tbsp. vegetable shortening or oil Rolling pin Cookie sheet Instructions: First preheat the oven to 375 degrees Mix the flour and salt in a bowl with a large wooden spoon Slowly add water until dough will form.  Dough should not stick to hands or silverware but should still be squishy Roll out dough into a 1/2 inch thick rectangle Cut dough into equal pocket sized squares for battlefield Make 4 rows with 4 indents across each hardtack with a knife Turn on oven and place them in their for 30 minutes Flip over for another 30 minutes Take hardtacks out and let them cool Prepare for war.
