My Dearest Sally,                                                                                                                   12-07-1861

After all that has happened lately, I realize that although slavery is the main accusation many make as a premise of war, I belive that our young nation cannot withstand being devided, with no thought or regard to the outcome of the slavery issue at hand. After my hasty enlistment, upon Licoln's call for 75,000 volunteers, I decided to be amoung them. I have become a Captain and lead my regiment with honor. Life on the Front is hard, the thought of you is the only thing that keeps me going. I dearly miss Philadelphia and our home there, as I also miss your famous lemon scones! Here we are at a lack of food let alone sugar to make scones that remind me of good times. Do bid a hello to our three sons and see that they keep up with their schooling. I pray that all is well and peacful, I hope to see you all soon!

Regards,
Alfred A. Scales
